For private PPO plans, the coverage is nationwide. Take your health coverage with you when you are on the road for work or play. If you develop a significant health condition, have the freedom to select the best specialist in the country to assist you.

For ACA/Marketplace plans, the coverage depends on the specific plan you select, but generally is limited to the county in which you reside. Most ACA plans are regionally based, meaning your coverage is usually limited to your local county or metro area. The network of doctors and hospitals is often tied to where you live, and you may need to switch plans if you move.

ACA/Obamacare is best for those with pre-existing conditions or those who would like routine maternity coverage. It is affordable if you are under the income threshold that qualifies you for a government subsidy. If you aren't getting government assistance, it is extremely expensive. These plans are mostly high premium/high deductibles because anyone -- regardless of health status -- can get on them. ​

Employer Plans most are great for the employee because the employer is legally responsible to pay 50% of the employee's monthly premium. The downside is that the employer is not responsible for paying anything towards family add-ons. This causes the price to jump up significantly when adding family members and can get pretty costly because the family will be paying full price to be added to the plan. ​

Private Insurance is medically underwritten, meaning you have to qualify based on your health. Since you are in a lower-risk pool of people, you get a lower premium and preferred rates, so they are more affordable than most plans with BETTER coverage.

Open enrollment applies to Public Marketplace/ACA/Obamacare plans. You can also get on these plans with a qualifying life event or during Open Enrollment. Public plans can also be canceled at any time. So if you were to find coverage somewhere else that fits you better, there is no issue switching.

Private plans are available year-round! There are no limitations of when you can get on and off of private healthcare.

Yes, no need to wait. Private plans do not have an open enrollment period and you can cancel at any time.

Public Marketplace/ACA/Obamacare plans are based on:

1. household income

2. zip code, and

3. age.

We ask for income information for your household (typically you, your spouse, any children residing with you) to determine whether you are likely to qualify for a subsidy. If you don't qualify for a government subsidy, the ACA/Marketplace can be very expensive. ​In April every year, if you estimated your household income incorrectly, the government will claw back the portion of the subsidy that you should not have received. Ouch!

Pricing for private plans is based on health, age, and zip code. If health insurance is ever suspiciously cheap, it is usually not a fully comprehensive plan. These are usually short-term or cost-sharing plans with VERY limited coverage.

1. The Network. What doctors and hospitals will accept the insurance? The Deductible. How much do you have to pay before the insurance company starts to contribute?
